Welcome 2021

Not in my memory at least has a New Year been as universally and eagerly awaited as 2021. Not because 2021 is expected to be an overly special year, but because we bid adieu to annus horribilis 2020: Year of The Corona.

It reflects the resilient character of runners and sports persons in general, that they were up and about as soon as restrictions were lifted. Indeed, even when the hard lockdown was in place, they continued to practice at home and take care of their fitness at home. Some walked/ jogged on their terraces, balconies, others set up improvised gyms in their living rooms, ran up and down stairs, danced and what not to stay fit.

Once the lockdown curbs were eased, people tentatively started moving outdoors and as gradually their confidence grew, people came out with a vengeance. It was heartening to see more and more folks realizing the importance of staying active and not ignoring their physical conditioning and health. The running and cycling scene in Delhi exploded with hitherto unseen numbers pulling up their socks, putting on their shoes and joining in.

Personally, midway through 2020, it had seemed unimaginable that I would achieve anything worthwhile running wise in the year. But human resilience is a wonderful thing and that combined with the push of my running partners Rajiv & Gaurav resulted in structured schedules and training. The end result was personal bests over 10K and 21K. A sub 44 minutes 10K and sub 100 minutes 21K, which had seemed distant dreams, were achieved.

So what does 2021 hold? Given the way 2020 panned out, it wouldn't be prudent to predict for 2021. However, what one hopes for are better times. When one can run free, run without the need for facemasks, be able to run as a group and participate in live races or events.

On a personal level, try the 'ultra' route to a 100K run, go sub 95 minutes for the half marathon and sub 20 minutes for the 5K.

Fingers crossed. Let's see.

  2. And regarding your personal bests. It was awesome how you persevered and managed to get faster and faster as the year went by. The way you’re going: “The future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades!” 😃

Enough sleep, anyone?

One common myth, which I have almost convinced myself in my case too, is that you can acclimatize your mind and body to do with less sleep without any negative effects. As a doctor you pride yourself about this. However, as the years roll by and you listen to your body more and analyze yourself with detachment, one reaches the conclusion that you DO need MORE/ ENOUGH sleep. That gets us to the question of how much is enough sleep. The answer is pretty straightforward, no ifs and buts: 7-9 hours a day for ages 18-64 and 7-8 hours for age 65 years and above. And why: Because it is linked to your emotional, mental and physical health, quality of life and safety. Inadequate sleep leads to irritability, poor concentration, anger and depression. Sleep is important to process new information and remember it. Sleep deficiency is linked to higher incidence of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and strokes. Not to forget lower immunity, making you more prone to infections, especially virals. Sleep

Simple Joys

It's a battle between the Joy of Running and Joy of Achievement    Technology has 2 sides to the coin, doesn't it? No doubt it makes life easy and makes things possible that we could never have even dreamt about. On the flip side, it complicates our lives. We hardly realize, but the present world is a prisoner of technology. Take away all the technology for a couple of hours and we are at a total loss and panicking....the proverbial 'fish out of water', thrashing about and almost asphyxiating.    How does this rant have a connection with running? My humble submission: Recreational running was supposed to be all about unconditional fun, to enjoy; not worry about targets or goals, not be controlled by technology.  Let's face it: The vast majority of us are not even close to the elite level or international competition class. And the fancy shoes, sports watches, running apps and motivational talks are not going to get us there.  If you just want to be better than yeste
